2026 Spring Faculty Honorees

Here are the faculty members who made a lasting impact on our Spring 2026 graduating class, in the words of the students themselves:

Dave Westenberg
Dr. David Westenberg

"Dr. Westenberg is one of the few professors on campus whose name alumni consistently remember when they return to visit our department. That alone speaks to the lasting impression he leaves on his students. During my four years, he gave me every opportunity to grow into the successful student I hoped to become. Whether through the people he introduced me to, the events we participated in together, or the many hours spent in the lab, he has had a profound impact on my undergraduate career.

K Chandrashekhara
Dr. K Chandrashekhara
"Dr. Chandrashekhara was a positive role model because of the passion and dedication they brought to both teaching and research. His enthusiasm for mechanical engineering made the material more engaging and motivated me to approach problems with curiosity and persistence. I admired how He balanced technical expertise with patience and encouragement, creating an environment where students felt comfortable asking questions and pushing themselves to learn more."

Kelvin Erickson
Dr. Kelvin Erickson
"Dr. Erickson showed practical examples of how PLC Programming is to be operated and used in real world examples. He was kind and very clear as a professor about how he will be grading assignments. He showed plenty of examples on how to conduct yourself in a professional setting."

Julie Sermon
Dr. Julie Semon
"Dr. Semon is passionate about what she teaches and she consistently puts forth effort. It is clear that she enjoys learning as much as she enjoys teaching. She made finishing my degree more enjoyable and engaging and encouraged me to go above and beyond and to continue my work outside of the classroom. She pushed me to compete in a pitch competition and my team ended up making it to semi-finals. We will get to compete in Taiwan in April and it is because she pushed us to go above and beyond."

Amber Henslee
Dr. Amber Henslee
"Dr. Henslee has been nothing short of a positive role model not only to me, but set an example to many of her students. She has high expectations in the classroom, yet always has her door open to her students if they need anything. She is always sharing well-being highlights at the beginning of class and making the classroom a safe learning space. The way she carries herself as a professor, clinician, and person inspires me to have that same effect on people in the future."

David Lipke
Dr. David Lipke
"Dr. Lipke has been one of the most influential role models in my academic career. As both my research advisor and professor, he has shown me what it looks like to be an excellent engineer while still being approachable and supportive. He holds high standards, but he also genuinely cares about his students and their growth. In research, he has pushed me to think more critically and independently, which has helped me gain confidence in my technical abilities. At the same time, he leads with patience and consistency, even during stressful times. Seeing how he balances professionalism, mentorship, and technical excellence has shaped how I hope to approach my own career in engineering."

Keith G. Tomazi
Dr. Keith Tomazi
"Dr. Tomazi spent lots of time truly educating his students. He is always on time, very respectful, and taught me what it means to be a real engineer. Going into design, his classes were informative, engaging, and a real blast to take. He always kept classes interesting and applicable. His industry stories, honest advice, and friendly demeanor encouraged me to do well in his class."

Dr. Dua
Dr. Rohit Dua
"Dr. Dua served as a positive role model by showing patience, encouragement, and a genuine passion for teaching the material. During some of the most challenging parts of my degree, he took the time to help me understand material and pushed me to believe in my abilities. His dedication to student success made a strong impact on me and helped shape the way I approach challenges in my academic and professional life."

Kent Robinson
"He was very invested in his students and provided a very interactive classroom environment. He told me to make connections as well as a young adult to build a better future and gave me advice on how to be successful as a small business owner."

Seung-Jong Park
Dr. Seung-Jong Park
"Dr. Seung-Jong Park has served as both my advisor and the department dean, and he exemplifies exceptional leadership, mentorship, and integrity. Despite the demands of his administrative role, he consistently makes time for his students, remaining highly responsive and accessible for guidance and support. He emphasizes the importance of the research process rather than focusing solely on outcomes, encouraging us to become ethical, independent, and resilient scholars."

Joan Schuman
Dr. Joan Schuman
"Along with being my professor for multiple courses, Dr. Schuman has always been encouraging towards finishing my degree and entering the workforce. She has helped with more and more opportunities for extracurriculars and presentations that help look towards future careers. She has helped me in so many ways when it has come to creating my schedules and designing my class loads so that I could graduate on time and know everything I would need for my career path."

Eric Bryan
Dr. Eric Bryan
"Dr. Bryan is the most genuine faculty member I have met in all my years of education. He is encouraging and kind, while also being extremely intelligent in his field of education. He helps his students think critically and encourages them to be the best they can be. By encouraging me, he has helped me develop my writing skills and has encouraged me to do my best in everything
I do."

Hunter Schroer
Dr. Hunter Schroer
“Dr. Schroer helped me refine my career path by taking the time to chat about grad school and the environmental engineering consulting world. He also is a role model, showing me and my other lab mates hard work, consistency, and sets a bar of excellence. When he talks about something, especially about something in the science or engineering field, he always knows what he’s talking about before he says it. He also speaks intentionally, and has so much knowledge about the courses he teaches and the research he does.”

Joel Burken
Dr. Joel Burken
"Dr. Joel Burken played an important role in encouraging me to continue and finish my degree. At a time when my education was not going well, he listened to my situation, guided me through the difficulties, and helped me find a better academic path by supporting my program change. His encouragement gave me hope and helped me stay focused on completing my studies."

Eric Showalter
Dr. Eric Showalter
"He motivated by caring for me; he showed encouragement for my success. I couldn’t have done it without him. Every time I needed to talk to him, whether that be about his class or life advice, he was always there."

Stephanie Fitch
Dr. Stephanie Fitch

"Steph exercised impressive patience when working with me during my math courses. Her friendliness and relatability are unparalleled. At S&T, my most difficult subject was math. Steph supported me through my ups and downs, and encouraged me to keep going. Her patience and ability to read students was impressive. She supported me and always found room for improvement in not only my work, but my attitude. This is above and beyond for me. She really was one of the best at S&T."

Matt Thimgan
Dr. Matthew Thimgan
“Dr. Thimgan pushed me to grow into a stronger and smarter version of myself. He helped me understand how important it is to focus on growth rather than perfection.”

Warner Meeks
Dr. Warner Meeks
“Dr. Meeks is very up-front and real with us in senior design and feels like a true mentor. He has always been a very approachable person in any class I have taken with him. The guest lectures that Dr. Meeks has brought in not only helped with design and to give us an understanding of industry but all just how to succeed after college. He brought in one to talk to us about 401ks and Roth IRAs and also just gives us advice on his own. He has been a great help in not only the senior design course but also in getting us ready for life and work after college.”

Jeremy Maurer
Dr. Jeremy Maurer
“I’m nominating Dr. Maurer for a reason that answers all three questions honestly. Through being my advisor for my first two years here and being my supervisor for the student research I performed, he essentially showed me how to be a geologist. Everything I learned and retained came predominantly from him and he was always there to help whenever I needed it. I don’t quite know how to properly word everything he did for me and how grateful I am for it other than “Thank you for everything.”

Steven Corns
Dr. Steven Corns
“I only had one class with Dr. Corns, but he has been so much help ever since. When I am in the E-Man building, which is a lot, he always comes around and makes sure I am doing okay. He is also very invested in my future, so he has helped me with some of the ASEM Academy initiation and encouraged me to continue with my masters. Every time I see him on campus, he instantly brightens my mood and can make me laugh. He was also an amazing teacher, and a great freshman year E-Man experience.”

2026 Spring Staff Honorees

Here are the staff members who made a lasting impact on our Spring 2026 graduating class, in the words of the students themselves:

Shari Hill
Shari Hill
"I, and many of my peers, would say that Ms. Shari Hill is probably the single most important university faculty member in the careers of many Black students at the University. Her support and advocacy has single-handedly revived multiple organizations that work to service the Black community in many facets of campus life. she advised NSBE, the National Society of Black Engineers, an organization that helped me land not only the 3 internships I had through my college career but also the full-time job that I was able to secure post-grad. Her impact, both direct and indirect, is immeasurable there alone. But additionally, she advised my fraternity as it returned to the campus in 2022. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., in which I was initiated in the Spring of 2023, has made an incredible impact on my life, and I can credit a lot of the development, strength, and academic performance to the support of that brotherhood and our campus advisor, Ms. Shari Hill."

Kelsey McCleary
Kelsey McCleary
“She was a positive role model because she showed compassion, patience, and genuine care during one of the most difficult times in my life. When I lost my son, she supported me with kindness and understanding, and her strength encouraged me not to give up. She demonstrated resilience and empathy in a way that inspired me to keep moving forward.”

Kurt Pritchett
"Kurt was supportive and a very positive role model during my time at S&T. I learned how to be patient, strive for success, and prioritization from him. His laid back attitude and ability to be level headed will stick with me for the rest of my career. He always supported my goals, no matter how unusual. However, never stopped being real with me."

Ethan Taber
Ethan Taber
"Ethan has shown be the value in working hands on and progress paying off. Being able to see the tangible benefits of my work makes me want to join the work force as an engineer and make changes that will help the world. He also gave me the opportunity to learn more than I could have in a classroom. Working intimately with systems and performing maintenance on equipment is easily the best learning experience I have received during my time at S&T. I can not overstate how much I have learned working for Ethan, he is a wealth of knowledge and loves to share it."

Nikki Segrest
Nikki Segrest
"Coach Nikki has made an immense impact during her first year as the men’s and women’s track and field teams’ head coach. Her work ethic and commitment to making each athlete’s experience the best possible do not go unnoticed. She has created a new level of excitement and motivation for the track team as a whole."

Jody Seely
Jody Seely
"Jody Seely has always been there with encouragement and help with getting my classes ready. She pushed me to excel in my degree pathway and complete it in 4 years."
